I have been interested in art ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil. I drew and dabbled in art throughout my life, while working at jobs to pay the bills.
Around 1977 I was hired to create scrimshaw for a jeweler who had no idea how it was done, just that he wanted it in his jewelry. So, I got to learn how to do it , and then went on to create it for him and others for about 8 years.
It was a natural transition to scratchboard, and several years I was creating scratchboard and occasionally teaching it. I also became more interested in painting, and began playing with pastels.
For many years I played with painting, in mostly watercolor and pastel.
In 1995 I moved to Louisville, CO and became active at the local art association. I took classes, entered shows, and served as vice president for two years. I met a community of other artists whom I became friends with.
I started a mural business, doing murals and some faux finishes. Eventually two other women artist friends joined me and we ran the business for 3 years. By this time I am painting more and more with mostly watercolors but also more with pastels.
I moved to Crested Butte in 2011 and have been 100% committed to my art ever since. I work at my art every day. I teach classes and show my work in Crested Butte, and have developed an online presence for my art.
I have been passionate about abstracts since moving to Crested Butte. I love the freedom of working this way. I feel working abstractly has strengthened all my skills as an artist. Often when starting an abstract painting, I have no idea where I'm going with it. I just play with layers and colors that my intuition guides me toward. This part of the process is the most freeing. The further I go into the process, the more refined and defined it becomes...I let the painting show me where to go.
But pastels also continue to be a love of mine, and I also paint landscapes, and occasionally abstracts in pastel.
For me, art is my life. I'm enthralled with light and its' effects on shape, color, texture. I look forward to continuing to expand, explore, learn and play in my art.
